A security guard was attacked with a crowbar as he delivered cash to Morrisons in Dee Lane. The guard was outside Morrisons at just before 5pm yesterday when he was set upon by two men. They hit him with a metal bar before grabbing the box full of cash.  They drove away in a silver Skoda Octavia, later found dumped nearby. Police believe the crooks got into a white van outside the Hilbre Court Hotel, on Banks Road, after ditching the Skoda.

My wife informs me that Elton John was in West Kirby on Thursday! Can anyone confirm this?

What other celebs have you seen in West Kirby (local footy players & managers don’t count  - that’s way too easy!) ?

Planning Application For New Petrol Station

I see that plans have been submitted for…

erection of petrol filling station including canopy and sales building together with car wash facilities, parking and landscaping APP/2008/6865

The site is described as land to rear of Telephone Exchange, adjacent to 43 Orrysdale Road, West Kirby, CH48 4EP. That’ll be opposite the Concourse car park then!

I wonder does this have anything to do with the proposed plans for the Aldi store in Bridge Road - as the existing petrol station is on that proposed site?

Ashton Park Is A Green Flag Winner

I’ve just found an old’ish press cutting from earlier this year that’s worth a mention.

Did you know that Ashton Park was one of only of eight Wirral parks / open spaces to be awarded a Green Flag award? This page details what a green flag award is.

I didn’t know that Ashton Park was laid out in 1899 and it covers some five hectares, either side of the Wirral Way.

Tatty Train Station

west kirby station

I took this photo of the front of West Kirby train station this week on what was an admittedly grey day. But don’t you think it’s looking rather tatty and unloved?

What should be a rather attractive building that creates or leaves a favourable impression (depending upon whether you’re coming or going) actually looks unloved, unkempt and to be honest a little depressing.  I know that the surrounding flower borders won’t look their best this time of year and to be fair they looked tidy, but the actual station entrance looks awful.

I think I’m right in saying that a local committee are actively trying to get the landlord to do something about the empty shops and the broken town clock that sits atop the building? Let’s hope some positive action takes place!

What do you think?

The controversial plans for a new hotel at the edge of Marine Lake in West Kirby have been significantly altered.

The Sail hotel project included plans for an 80 room luxury hotel but it’s suggested that revised plans are due to be submitted for a smaller 40 room building. For further information read this article from the Daily Post.
