West Kirby poets success in UN Poetry For Peace

West Kirby poet Chris Lawrence has enjoyed success in a recent competition organised by the United Nations.

Chris submitted an entry to the United Nations competition. During the four week campaign, a social media Poetry for Peace contest invited the world to hear the living testimonies of atomic bomb survivors, called HIBAKUSHA, and respond to their stories in verse. Chris came third out of 712 poets who in total wrote 742 poems and has been invited to attend a winners presentation at the Japanese Embassy. You can read his poem right here.

Friday Photo: Bathing in Marine Lake

marine lake bathing pool

Many thanks to Josef Hanik, Senior Ranger for Wirral Coast, for sending me the above photo of bathers enjoying the water at the long-gone West Kirby bathing pool. I presume the large building behind the bathing pool is the former Hydro Hotel. Was the bathing pool open to the public or just for patrons of the hotel? There’s no date on the image – care to hazard a guess?

While you’re not allowed to swim in Marine Lake today (other than for the Boxing Day Dip) it’s a very popular venue for sailing and wind surfing.

Friday Photo: Before the Concourse

before concourse

Ever wondered how West Kirby looked prior to the construction of The Concourse? Well thanks to the above photo kindly sent in by Terry Roberts you can! Click on the photo for a slightly larger version. You can see the old railway lines that one day must have gone along the Wirral Way.

Note what looks like a queue for a film at the former Tudor cinema. That building might be an Aldi supermarket one day – you never know!

Caldy Cricket Club: Recognise anyone?

Many thanks to Carolyn McCrae for sending in this old photo of former members of Caldy Cricket Club. The photo was taken at Mill Hey, Caldy in around 1953. Carolyn names some of the players but can you possibly complete the blanks?

Wine store plans for former car showrooms

Plans to convert a former car showrooms in to a wine store in West Kirby are to be considered by Wirral Council.

National wine retailer Majestic Wines has submitted plans to convert the former Road Range Mercedes Benz garage and showrooms on Column Road (pictured) in to a store for the bulk sale of wines, spirits and beers. The application, which was submitted in early April, will be decided no earlier than 17th May, 2011.

The proposed redevelopment retains the existing buildings with “significant improvements” to the external appearance of the site.

Unexploded bomb

Friday Photo: Grange Road Bridge

grange road bridge

Many thanks to Terry Roberts for sending me this photo that shows the old bridge at the bottom of Grange Hill/Grange Road. Terry dates this photo at about 1956 and wonders by any chance if anyone recognises the boy in the photo.

I remember the old bridge being there in the late 1970′s early 1980′s but I can’t recall when it removed? I remember the school buses (Crosville) turning round near the bridge on what was probably one big mud patch.

Feel free to comment.

Loch Fyne To Close

ring-o-bells

It appears that the rumours about the West Kirby Loch Fyne venue closing are true.

The Ring-o-Bells in Village Road is to become a Greene King pub after a £150,000 refurbishment programme. It is expected that the venue will offer both drinks and food with a 60/40 split in favour of drink, with an anticipated turnover of £15,000/week. The once popular beer garden is included within the redevelopment.

Here are the retail manager vacancy details.
