Today Wirral Council has announced increased fees for council car parks across Wirral with West Kirby seeing significant price increases.
From April 8th parking at the Dee Lane and Concourse car parks will cost the following:
- up to 1hr = £1.05
- up to 2hrs = £1.65
- up to 3hrs = £2.05
- up to 4 hrs = £3.40
- up to 5 hrs = £4.10
- all day = £8.00
Currently it costs 30p to park at The Concourse for up to 1hr and £1.30 for up to 5 hrs. As many motorists park at The Concourse to visit the health centre a 75p increase for less than an hours parking will be presumably unwelcome.
In addition to the above price increases, free parking after 3pm will stop after the end of March.
Cllr Harry Smith, Wirral Council Cabinet member for Streetscene and Transport Services, said: “We believe it is was unfair to charge such different rates for car parking across Wirral and we therefore took the decision, in putting together the budget for 2013-14, to standardise charges in car parks at the current rate for Birkenhead car parks.
“I appreciate that people will see the cost of parking their car in some parts of the borough rise considerably as a result of the change, but we believe having standardised charges across Wirral is the right and fair way to go in the longer term.
“At the same time, I believe reducing the ‘all day’ charges in Birkenhead on-street long stay bays to £2.50 will make these spaces more competitive with private operators in these areas.”
What do you think about these forthcoming price increases? Are they way too much or have West Kirby motorists been receiving too good a deal? Do you think it’ll sway motorists to use the free (so long as you actually shop in store) car parks at Morrisons and Aldi?
