Friday Photo: Ashton Park Bridge

We call this the Ashton Park bridge. It crosses the Wirral Way and joins the upper and lower sections of the park. Do those metal arches actually serve any purpose?

I think that the bridge was originally glazed between the hoops but might be wrong on this – it wouldn’t last 5 minutes these days! As I recall, there are a couple of metal plates, over each trackway at floor level on outside of bridge, that are/were there in order to divert steam coming from passing trains.
In years past, we would get someone to shin over and stand on them, then fake-beat on his hands when any unsuspecting member of public passed by, as he ’screamed’ for mercy against the fall he was about to (not) take when we broke his grip. Such japes!!
